We’re All In This Together

A quote that I often refer back to at different points in my life is: “What you do, is no measure compared to who you are”.
It had a profound impact to finding myself and evaluating my values.  Even during these unprecedented times (COVID-19) when a job title, status and even a paycheck can be taken away, what can’t be taken away are your values, leadership skills, sincerity, creativity and your ability to be the best person you can be.
It is my nature and profession to put people first. I truly believe that the workplace will not return to what it was. But in order to return to the new normal, corporate strategy and priorities need to shift. The practice of Change Management needs to be at the heart of business. Staff need to feel safe and comfortable. This is the first time in human history where we are all, globally and collectively, facing the same enemy. Forget enterprise change management – we need a global strategy! One that is rooted in the psychology of safety. We once spoke about bringing your whole self to work, I believe we will see a shift from putting the onus on the employee to bring their whole selves to work to the employer to think about their employee holistically; mind, body and soul.
Remember that we are social beings. In times of unrest there is a fear of being kicked out of the tribe. The world’s leading researcher on self-compassion, Kristen Neff, shared that evolutionarily one of the worst things that can happen is to be isolated from the group because then we are not safe. I encourage you to hold onto – and protect – your tribes, stay social, but stay physically distant. What strategies are you using to help your tribe feel safe and supported?
A growth mindset will help you to overcome feelings of anxiousness and helplessness. It can help you to cultivate consciousness, build resilience and prepare you to learn. Dr. Caroline Leaf recently shared that 99% of energy is mind driven. What you think about will impact the neurochemistry of your brain and your body. So, practice an act of kindness, practice gratitude, count your blessings, and Simba remember who you are – but seriously remember who you are. You bring immense value to people’s lives every day and no job title, or status will change that.
